How to Apply Eye Makeup: 7 Steps to an Everyday Look

How To Apply Eye Makeup

Everyone from Kylie Jenner to Jeffree Star talks about how to apply eye makeup for an everyday look. The typical everyday eye makeup look is natural. You aren’t going to wear primary colors every day. Also, who has time to make sure your green eyeshadow doesn’t clash with your outfit? The everyday look needs to be simple and realistic. Do you get dressed first or do your makeup first? How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

There’s so much to think about–which is why you should have go-to eye makeup for an everyday look. We love makeup as much as the next person in the industry, but not all of us have the time or patience to be creative with our eyelids at 7 AM. To make things a little easier for you, here’s our guide on how to apply eye makeup for an everyday look.

Step 1

Start by priming your entire face (eyelids included) with any of our Beautyblender primers. The Leveler will blur redness and smooth uneven texture – recommended for normal to oily skin. Our best “dry skin” primer is the Opal Essence. This one is a serum primer providing a hydrating base to cover dry patches. Last up is the Selfie Shield. Intended to block UVA, UVB and HEV rays, this primer is also terrific for an everyday look.

Step 2

Prep your under-eye area by using the rollerball end of the High Roller. Sweep the ball in an upward motion, starting along your nose and working your way up to and across your under-eye area. This will help depuff tired skin around your eyes. You can skip this step if you’re short on time–but even using the rollerball for 2 or 3 minutes will give your skin a little pick me up in the AM.

Step 3

Pick a neutral shade with the same undertone as your base to create dimension. Use the Shady Lady for this step–the densely packed bristles and medium shape lay down eyeshadow with less fallout. Starting at the crease on the outside of your lid, sweep the shadow towards the middle of your eye.

Step 4

Next, select a dark neutral shade of eye shadow (try mattes over shimmers for a really natural finish) and apply it onto the crease as desired and use the bristles with a back-and-forth windshield wiper motion to blend the shade. This will serve as your base. If there’s one thing we know about here at Beautyblender, it’s all about acing your base. This goes for your eyelids, too–not just your complexion. A strong base layer gives you a smooth canvas to build on for the rest of your products.

Step 5

Switch back to the High Roller to blend your shadow. Since we’re going for an everyday look here, use your best judgment to keep it natural. Now may not be the time for crazy colors and exotic blending. Sometimes, less is more.

Step 6

If you’re an eyeliner person, use the Wing Man to dip the bristles in your favorite product and place the brush on the outer last line. Use tiny strokes to create a wing and work your way towards the inner corner of your eye. If you need a little extra help with a winged eyeliner look, we’ve got you covered.

Step 7

No eye makeup look is complete without a little brow love. Beyond eye shadow, you can use The Player to tame your brows and fill them in with a bit of color if needed. For an everyday look, stick to the basics. A little bit of shaping with a simple fill-in will likely work. It’s all about the arch, am I right?!

Step 8

Finish up with the final touches–your favorite mascara and a spritz of Re-Dew Set & Refresh Spray. This powerful mist will keep your makeup intact all day. Fun fact: you can keep your Re-Dew in your bag to freshen up at any point during the day if you need a little pick-me-up.
